Key Stage 1 (5 - 7yrs)
Children in Year 1 & Year 2 follow the Primary Curriculum.
From the beginning of Year 1 until the end of Year 2 all children are taught all the subjects within the National Curriculum, including Religious Education. The children progress according to their ability which may vary between subjects. Class teachers teach all the subjects to their pupils but are proactive in seeking advice and training from other members of staff who have expertise in a particular subject.
We follow a Creative/ Experiential Curriculum which is based on an exciting introductory text. The teachers work hard to ensure that the children’s learning is based on real-life experiences which develop their creativity and imagination. We place great importance on the Cultural Capital that we offer our children, those experiences beyond the curriculum, which support the children in becoming fully engaged and responsive in their learning experiences.
Our curriculum is planned to ensure the progression of knowledge and skills. Teachers plan after assessing what the children already know and therefore identifying what they need to do next. Teachers always have the End of Key Stage expectations in mind in order to plan for their children’s needs and plan the next steps needed to succeed.
Teachers use an ‘Adaptive Teaching’ style to challenge and support all children whatever their starting point, through enabling or enhancing the learning, always with the end of year expectations in mind
Key Stage One teachers meet termly with Subject Leads from Exhall Junior School to ensure a smooth transition from Y2 into Y3.
The staff have devised a “Creative Curriculum Recipe” which ensures that the learning needs of all our children are planned for and met.
“Really enjoyed spending time in the classroom and my child showing me around, it was also beneficial to him, he has looked forward to me coming” – Parent Quote.
